As To Touching The Earth
I was talking with an 'old timer' today, about how he grew up without running water, electricity, cars, or tractors. It made me realize just how fast things are changing. Life's going faster and faster, at breakneck speed. But at what price? And what have we lost? And how do we get off this run away train?
My friend talked about how he would plow with a mule. Sometimes, he was the mule, pulling the plow himself. Then, he would dig the holes, putting in a little bit of manure, then, three seeds of corn, or three peas, or one potato eye, and pour one cup of water into each hole, then, on down the rows.
We Can't See When We're Lost In This Age of Distraction
Sure, living off the grid is a lot of work. And for most of us, that's a bridge too far. But just how much have we lost in our age of distraction, that which should not have been forgotten?
OK, What In The World Is Being Grounded?
There are those of us, who touch the earth, physically, who have a groundedness others don't even know about. It's like a distant memory of Eden in our distracted consciousness. Grounded lives move with the rhythm of the seasons, in an ebb and flow, of a work and rest, all in a beautiful dance. Being human, grounding is extremely important. Grounding connects us to life. It gives our mind rest. It's totally therapeutic.
So, when I run across sites like Shawn and Lindy Brown's Outdoor Gulf Coast, I get excited. Why? Because they're bridging us, to touch who we really are. By the way, Want to build your family? Studies show that Camping together is the best way, year after year. Think about it: grounding, connectedness, and moving into the rhythms of life. After all, aren't we created from the dust of the ground? It's basic to our physiology.
It's hard to see what you've lost, when you're spinning in your own little 'artificial' world. If you can make the change. Take the plunge. Start with a little thing. Like growing herbs on your kitchen windowsill. It will make a world of difference. But 'you can't connect the dots looking forward.' Steve Jobs.
So, check in with your soul more,
and your scales less.
There's a deep yearning in you, for roots to grow, and wings to fly.
Because when we get out to touch, and smell the earth, we start on A Voyage of Discovery.
Photo: This little guy rode in my hair, hidden behind my sunglasses. For 3 hours he perched there from greenhouse to seed house. How cool is that.
