"Turn your radio on, Turn your radio on, And listen to the music in the air." ~ Ray Stevens
Did your family ever have a radio like this one? Ours did.
As small kids we made fun of 'spiritual people' saying stuff like, "Put your hands on the radio. Feel the Spirit of God coming out your fingertips."
It brings a smile to my face when I think of 'tuning into God' like a radio, but it's so works! You see, God is invisible like the airwaves, and like the airwaves, he's all around us, right here, right now! The big word is Omnipresent.
God Is Spirit
God is Spirit, so to communicate, we've gotta 'Turn On' our spirit, and 'Tune It In' to God, like the dial on a radio.
Nobody gets it right at first. It's a learning process. We'll miss the station, but as we learn the frequency and the station's sound, we'll get better and better at it.
The more we do spiritual practice, the more natural and integrated it becomes in our lives.
The Two Steps of Breakthrough
1. Spiritual Practice is like learning anything else. First, We learn the skill, or the craft, like the practice of Morning Prayer. Then, we get good at it. We become skilled craftsmen, teachers, pastors, healers, as we mentor others.
So, as we grow in our spiritual life. We become more and more integrated, more in tune with God. In fact, we become less weird, and more authentic and vibrant. At this point, we have been moving 'in and out of State Experiences', spiritually speaking, like attending a revival and going home.
2. Now, our next step, and this can take some time, like Malcolm Gladwell's 10,000 Hour Rule, we grow into Stage Experiences of spiritual living. They become hardwired into our lives and our brains. This means that our spiritual life becomes a place of dwelling, and abiding, rather than moving into and out of states of being.
We're still the craftsman, but now we become more of the artist. A master craftsman, who creates under the guidance of God. It's at this point, that we move into a spiritual life of rest. Here, we can live out of that place, that Abiding in The Vine. We are constantly awake and aware of God's presence within us, and with us. We join in as God moves through us to touch this broken world.
And it's all because one day, we "Turned On" and "Tuned In" to God.
And in that one day, Jesus totally ruined us for anything less...a good beyond our wildest dreams.
